I have been interested in horses and horse sports since I was little, and I had the privilege to learn and train in Dressage for many years here in central Alberta when I was younger. I absolutely love the sport, but as I got busy with university and then career and then just life in general as a young adult, I had to make the choice to take a step back from riding temporarily. I plan on getting back to it one day, but in the mean time I get to live vicariously through my family and friends, taking photos of their lovely horses! It’s the perfect way to stay involved in a community that is just so much fun.
The main advantage I have with this type of photography as compared to some others is simply my pre-existing horse knowledge. I know how Dressage tests are ridden and I know the patterns and where to stand to get the best view of the different movements. I understand how to read a hunter/jumper course and know how to get the best camera angles of the jumps. And, I know the types of shots riders are looking for of themselves and their horses (including the occasional funny oopsies that can happen!).
My camera equipment helps me out a lot as well (check out my about section!). My main lenses are perfect for capturing action from a distance, so I can capture a nice picture from all the way across the arena. My camera takes very large megapixel pictures, which allows for impressive enlargements. And one of the most convenient aspects of my camera is the super high frame rate – I can capture up to 20 pictures in just one second! This means that if you are performing a complicated move in your test, I will be much more likely to capture the perfect moment by taking a large burst of shots!
Check out my recent events page, which will allow you to see the proofs for some of the recent shows I have attended!
